Chanel’s most comprehensive leather analysis and care (Part 1)

Become a fashion insider | Chanel’s most comprehensive leather analysis and care

When I was chatting with my friends, I found that there are really many “shopping novices”. They also buy a lot of expensive bags and follow the trend to buy popular, classic, and the latest models… Of course, I can’t even afford the most expensive ones 😹😹, but without exception, they only know that they are made of cowhide, sheepskin, crocodile leather… That’s all. Therefore, most of them don’t know how to care for and preserve them. Neglecting special leathers may cause the bag to deteriorate faster and even completely ruin it. So in this article, I will combine my own bag care experience and the care tips of other friends and share them all with you – the most comprehensive analysis of Chanel leather bag identification and maintenance. 👉👉👉

Caviar Classic Caviar

Chanel’s Caviar leather is its most famous and most diverse. Made from calfskin, Caviar’s fluffy appearance is fuller than traditional cowhide leather. It is tougher and heavier than lambskin, making it the preferred choice for those who want to carry their Chanel bag more often.

The original Classic Caviar comes in two leathers, as shown below. Generally speaking, Shiny Caviar is the most popular, both for its appearance and durability. However, the biggest benefit of Matte is that it effectively blurs minor scratches.

A few years ago, Chanel placed a greater emphasis on lambskin. This meant that in recent years, more lambskin bags were produced than classic caviar. When you see gorgeous new colors in various collections, they are mostly lambskin. Lambskin is more aesthetically pleasing, with its softness and delicacy immediately appealing. Caviar, on the other hand, has a fine, flowing grain, and its hardness and pliability make it more practical.

Soft Caviar

In fact, about 20 years ago, Chanel’s Classic Caviar leather was a single, relatively hard cowhide. Since 2001, Caviar leather has found its own unique expression. Soft Caviar cowhide expands the design diversity of the Caviar collection, combining the dual charms of lambskin and Classic Caviar. It can be designed to be versatile, depending on the season, style, and color.

As the name suggests, Soft Caviar is softer than Classic Caviar leather. While this leather isn’t as durable as Classic Caviar, it’s much more durable than smooth calfskin or lambskin. However, Suede—a light-colored suede caviar—is the least durable of the caviar varieties and even more refined than lambskin, requiring meticulous care and handling.

Special Finishes

Pearlescent, lacquer, and glazed caviar are all prominent embellishments in the Caviar collection. These bags are as durable as classic Caviar leather. The diverse designs appeal to both younger generations and mainstream shoppers. The pearlescent white Iridescent Caviar, in particular, is undoubtedly a true beauty for young women.

❤️How to maintain

Caviar is the most durable leather. Its pebbled texture makes it even stronger and more durable. Daily wear and tear is completely negligible, as long as it’s not used frequently or damaged maliciously. 😹 It’s expensive, after all. Take my Caviar, for example. It was a graduation gift when I graduated in 2013. It’s been almost eight years now. I’ve never polished or otherwise treated the leather.

  1. It is not afraid of water. After each use, wipe it gently with a slightly damp cotton cloth
  2. If used frequently, it is recommended to do professional leather care once every six months
  3. Frequent use will cause fine dust in the fine lines. It is recommended to buy a pure wool soft small bristle brush to brush gently
  4. The fine lines of soft caviar will acquire style the longer it is used, but remember not to deliberately make it look old.
